The dream started in 1999
It was in the middle of the Argelia desert in North Africa where I was a volunteer photographer at the Saharahui Refugee Camp. Before going I knew the children there didn't speak my language. My thought was to bring candy as a gift and as a way to connect with them.
A simple and powerful idea was sparked the moment I saw a child taste his first piece of candy. The joyful and happy response inspired me to then share candy with the other children and I soon became known as Sara Caramelo. (Sara Candy)
With more research I learned that many places around the world had never heard of candy. Children hadn't experienced candy of any kind. I was surprised and saddened that this joy wasn't available to them. My idea grew even brighter and Caramelo, a non-profit organization, was created. There are now volunteers at Caramelo that travel the world to bring candy, happiness and a lot of love to children who need it. Candy by candy we see the lives of millions of children becoming sweeter.
